Tai chi (also spelled taiji or taijiquan) is a gentle, flowing internal martial art that combines slow, deliberate movements with deep breathing and mindful focus. Often called “meditation in motion,” it improves balance, reduces stress, strengthens legs and core, and cultivates inner calm. While rooted in ancient Chinese Martial are and Daoist philosophy, tai chi is accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels.
-
Absolutely! Our classes welcome complete beginners. We start with foundational movements and principles, building step-by-step so you feel confident and supported. No prior experience, flexibility, or fitness level is required—just an open mind and comfortable clothes.
We suggest starting with an empty hand form class - try a Wudang, WuHao or Chen class based on your schedule and interests.First classes can be awkward - but know we’ve all been there. You’re not supposed to know what you’re doing - so it’s ok to be lost!
-
We primarily teach Wudangshan taiji Wu/Hao-style, Chen-style, taiji weapons (sword, saber, fan), interactive tai chi, push hands, and qigong. We also teach liehubafa (Water Boxing) and Tangquan. See our Forms Taught page for details.
-
This varies a lot! Most students learn the basic beginning moves in a few months, while a long form can take an average of two years to learn. Tai chi is a lifelong practice: you’ll continue refining your movements, deepening your understanding of internal principles, and discovering new layers of benefit with every session. Many students practice for years—and still find new insights.
-
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows free movement (think sweatpants, or athletic wear). Flat, flexible-soled shoes (like canvas sneakers or tai chi slippers) are ideal—but most shoes will work. No special uniform is required. We are outdoors in a covered pavilion. We have walls, fans and heaters but you will still want to plan for the weather temps.
-
Just yourself and a willingness to explore. First classes can be awkward - but know we’ve all been there. You’re not supposed to know what you’re doing - so it’s ok to be lost!
-
Our group classes typically have 6–15 students, ensuring you get personalized attention while enjoying the energy of a group. Private and semi-private lessons are also available for more focused instruction.
